The Surprising Benefits of Chemical Peels

10/09/2020 11:29AM ● By John Gales

After the harsh rays of the summer sun, autumn brings with it the nostalgia of falling leaves, apple picking, and pumpkin carving. Fall also gives your skin a chance to rest from too much UV exposure. Do you suffer from hyperpigmentation, breakouts, sun damage or wrinkles? A chemical peel is an effective treatment for these conditions - and right now is the perfect time to do it!

ALL ABOUT CHEMICAL PEELS

A chemical peel is a skin treatment. The active ingredients in most peels are alpha or beta hydroxy acids - namely glycolic and lactic acid - which are chemical exfoliants. After the treatment, the top layer of skin peels off, leaving a smoother, more even tone beneath. The face is the most common and popular area to treat with a chemical peel. While there may be some peeling and “sloughing” (when the top layer of skin sheds due to the treatment) you should not experience any intense redness or irritation. Chemical peels are safe for all skin types.

There are different levels of chemical peels available. Deep peels - known by the infamous episode of Sex and the City - are not common today. At Bare Medical Spa, we offer VIPeels (a medium level depth peel) and more superficial options like the Hydrafacial. These chemical peel treatments are effective without harsh or painful side effects. You will see visible improvements in your skin’s appearance after just one peel, but multiple treatments are necessary to experience optimal results. Just as it takes time for skin damage to accumulate, it also takes time to reverse!

LOWER UV LEVELS

So why is fall a great time to schedule your chemical peel? First of all, cooler temperatures and the changing seasons means lower UV levels. Intense sun exposure can damage skin cells, which in turn contribute to issues like wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of sun damage.

In the fall and winter months, lower UV levels mean a decreased risk of sun damage prior to and after your chemical peel, when your skin is particularly sensitive to UV rays.

CONVENIENT RECOVERY

Another reason to book your chemical peel treatment in the fall is because it’s easier to stay home and care for your skin during the cooler weather months. A consistent and thorough post-treatment skin care routine is vital to protecting the treated area, although you should not experience any harsh or painful side effects. It usually takes between 5-7 days to see results. If you do experience slight peeling or sloughing of the top skin layer during that time, you can stay indoors if you’d like. However, the side effects are so minimal with superficial and medium depth peels that you can enjoy all the fun festivities that fall has to offer - without worrying about irritated or red skin.

BETTER RESULTS

Finally, without the danger of too much sun exposure and the negative effect it has on your skin both before and after your treatment, you can expect optimal results from a chemical peel. Make sure to wear sunscreen with at least an SPF 50 every day. Try not to touch your face --- if your hair gets in the way, pull it up. We will provide you with post peel kits to use on your skin during the peeling process to help achieve optimal results. All of these practices will work with the chemical peel itself to give you the beautiful, even skin you want and deserve!
