A HERO Remembered - BURLINGTON’S ETHAN ALLEN MONUMENT STANDS TALL IN VERMONT’S HISTORY

Four score and seventy-two years ago, the grave of Ethan Allen, Vermont’s great Revolutionary War hero, was marked with a plain marble headstone. However, in 1855, the Vermont Legislature appropriated $3,000 for the memorial, which was finally dedicated eighty years later, in 1873. It was originally believed that the monument was erected directly over Ethan Allen’s actual grave, but now historians admit that Allen’s remains probably lay somewhere nearby the memorial.
